How to Bake a Cake: A Step by Step Guide

With the holidays just around the corner, gatherings, baking, and fun are in full effect. If you’re stuck on what to bring to the next holiday party, look no further. This easy to follow, step by step guide will help you to create the perfect, home-made cake to impress your family and friends.

Step 1:

Decide what kind of cake will make. For a child’s birthday party, you might want to consider something rich, full of chocolate, with colorful decorations. A more sophisticated gathering calls for something a bit more challenging to truly awe the crowd – perhaps a blueberry cake with lemon zest frosting. An easy, vanilla-based cake is the perfect foundation for a variety of creative flavors.

Step 2:

Start off by preheating the oven to 400 degrees F and coating an 8-inch pan with butter.

Step 3:

Gather your ingredients – you’ll need 1.5 cups of sifted flour, 1.5 tsp of baking powder, 1/4 tsp of salt, 1/2 cup of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 2 eggs, 1/2 tsp vanilla, and 1/2 cup of milk.

Step 4:

Sift your dry ingredients together in a large bowl, and slowly beat in the moist ingredients with an electric mixer.

Step 5:

Pour the batter into the prepared, greased pan and cook for around 30 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick can be inserted and come out dry. Cool the cake on a drying rack until it is no longer warm.

Step 6:

Depending on which flavor of cake you would like to make, prepare the frosting (chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla with fruit add-ins or sprinkles are all great choices!). Layered cakes can be stacked on top of each other with fruit fillings between each section, and smoothed over with a thin layer of frosting. For children’s birthdays, consider adding creative variations of frosting and edible toppings!
