How to Make Healthier Versions of Your Favorite Fast Food

One type of fast food that we all love are French fries. It is easy to make a healthy version of this recipe by baking them in the oven instead of deep frying in oil. Start with some Russet potatoes. Use one per person depending on how many people your serving.

Peel the potatoes and throw away the skins. Cut each potato in half and then in half again length wise. Do this on a solid cutting board with a sharp knife. Cut each piece into 1/4 inch strips as evenly as possible.

It is suggested that you soak the potatoes in ice water about 20 minutes. This removes the starch in them. Once you have soaked them strain in strainer and dry with paper towels. In a large plastic bag put two to four tablespoons of olive oil add potatoes.

Shake bag and coat potato strips evenly with oil. Line a baking tray with parchment paper or foil. Be sure to spray foil so fries do not stick. Spread evenly on baking rack. Sprinkle with salt Preheat oven to 450 and wait about 10 minutes before putting in fries. Bake about 1/2 hour or longer until brown and crispy.

You can use sweet potatoes to make fries peel them and cut same way. They take longer to cook so increase time about 10 to 15 minutes when cooking. This is another healthy type of fry.
